Program Description

This program is defined by three broad themes: knowledge and power, social justice, and the Sociology of everyday life. Sociology at Acadia University is recognized nationally for offering critical studies in: race and ethnic relations, social justice, food, health, gender and sexuality, research methodology and ethics, social theory, development, labour and migration, political economy, criminology and culture. We emphasize a commitment to public sociology and transformative practices, and students are offered an opportunity to develop their conceptual and analytical skills in order to prepare for further studies and professional opportunities.

Sociology courses and degrees are relevant to those planning careers in: academics, education, law, politics, public policy, health, environmental studies, community development, criminology, or social work.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Level of Education Required: Grade 12 / High School

Min GPA: 70.0% Convert grades

English Proficiency Requirements:

For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:

Min TOEFL iBT: 90 (Min Reading: 20.0, Min Writing: 20.0, Min Listening: 20.0, Min Speaking: 20.0)

Min IELTS overall: 6.5 (Min Reading: 6.0, Min Writing: 6.0, Min Listening: 6.0, Min Speaking: 6.0)

NOTE: Applicants interested in applying for direct admission, but are yet to complete an acceptable language test, can do so, but must provide valid results before receiving a final offer letter.

For conditional admission, instead of submitting language proficiency test scores, applicant may complete English courses prior to the academic program. The length of the English course is determined based on the applicant's level of English proficiency.
