Program Description


The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film offers four separate programs of study in Business Communication, Media and Communication Studies, Film Studies, and Popular Culture. A four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours degree and a three-year program leading to the BA Pass degree is offered in all three programs. In addition, the Department is involved in programs with community colleges which offer students the opportunity to earn an honours degree in Communication Studies and a college diploma or certificate.

Media and Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the impact of media and communication in the creation of meaning, identity, and social change, emphasizing the study of media content, audiences, and institutions in their political, economic, and social contexts in Canada and elsewhere.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Level of Education Required: Grade 12 / High School

Min GPA: 75.0% Convert grades

English Proficiency Requirements:

For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:

Min TOEFL iBT: 88 (Min Writing: 21.0, Min Speaking: 21.0)

Min IELTS overall: 6.5 (Min Reading: 6.0, Min Writing: 6.0, Min Listening: 6.0, Min Speaking: 6.0)

Min Duolingo English Test Score: 110

NOTE: Applicants interested in applying for direct admission, but are yet to complete an acceptable language test, can do so, but must provide valid results before receiving a final offer letter.

For conditional admission, instead of submitting language proficiency test scores, applicant may complete English courses prior to the academic program. The length of the English course is determined based on the applicant's level of English proficiency.
